FIRST SHOT

A 10-week learn-to-shoot program for players ages 6 and 7

A progressive introduction to shooting that helps young players build proper technique, generate more power and work toward lifting the puck.

No previous shooting ability is required.

Every Player Starts Somewhere

First Shot is designed for young hockey players who are still learning how to control the puck and create an effective shooting motion.

At this age, team practices must cover skating, puck control, passing, positioning and many other skills. That often leaves limited time for focused shooting instruction and repetition.

First Shot gives players dedicated time to learn the fundamentals in an age-appropriate small-group environment. With a maximum of 10 athletes, coaches can provide individual instruction while keeping every player active and engaged.

A Progressive 10-Week Method

First Shot is not a collection of unrelated drills. Each session builds on the skills introduced the week before, allowing players to develop their shooting motion one step at a time.

1. Build the Foundation

Players learn proper hand position, shooting posture, puck placement and blade contact.

2. Generate Power

Athletes begin combining their hands, body movement, weight transfer and follow-through to produce a stronger shot.

3. Put It Together

Players work toward a smoother, more repeatable release while improving their accuracy and learning to direct the puck toward a target.

Our coaches use simple instructions, frequent repetition and age-appropriate progressions that young players can understand and remember.

What Players Will Learn

Throughout the program, athletes will work on:

  • Proper hand position and stick control

  • Athletic shooting posture and balance

  • Puck positioning and blade contact

  • Weight transfer and power generation

  • Coordinating the hands, arms and body

  • Following through toward the target

  • Improving shot accuracy and consistency

Expected Outcomes

By the end of the program, players should demonstrate:

  • Better control of the puck during the shooting motion

  • Improved balance and coordination

  • A stronger and more accurate shot

  • Greater confidence when shooting

  • A better understanding of how shooting power is created

  • Progress toward intentionally lifting the puck

Every child develops at a different pace. The objective is not simply to lift the puck once. It is to establish proper mechanics that players can continue using as they advance through minor hockey.

Is First Shot Right for Your Player?

First Shot is designed for players who:

  • Are 6 or 7 years old

  • Are beginning to learn how to shoot

  • Cannot yet consistently lift the puck

  • Need more focused instruction and repetition

  • Are ready for an introduction to specialized hockey training

No advanced shooting experience is required. First Shot complements regular minor hockey development and the Hockey Québec MAHG curriculum. It does not replace team practices.
