Our Philosophy

Development Without the Usual Frustrations

Families should not have to fight through politics, confusion, fundraising pressure, unclear costs, or inconsistent development just to give their child a serious hockey experience.

The Rangers program was built to remove many of the frustrations families often experience in traditional hockey environments:

  • parent-coach politics

  • unclear decision-making

  • excessive fundraising

  • paying for extras that do not support development

  • inconsistent practice quality

  • programs built more around image than substance

  • social media attention over actual player progression

  • too many games, not enough teaching

  • vague promises with no clear development plan

Substance Over Social Media

In today’s hockey environment, attention can sometimes be mistaken for development.

The Rangers take a different approach.

We are not building the program around highlight clips, online personalities, or coaches who are more focused on growing a following than developing players. Social media can be useful, but it should never replace substance.

Our focus is on what happens when the camera is off:

  • clear practice plans

  • proper teaching progressions

  • correction and feedback

  • player accountability

  • measurable improvement

  • habits that translate into games

We believe families should judge a program by the quality of the coaching, the structure of the development, and the progress of the players, not by likes, views, or polished clips.

Development has to be real. That is the standard.

Transparency & Trust

Families deserve to know exactly who is working with their child.

The Rangers program is built around transparency, professionalism, and peace of mind. Parents should never have to wonder who is on the ice, who is running development sessions, or what background that person brings into the environment.

All Rangers coaches and staff involved with players are subject to a background and criminal record verification process. This is part of our commitment to providing a safe, professional, and accountable environment for every athlete.

We believe youth hockey programs should be clear about:

  • who is coaching the players

  • what their experience is

  • what role they play in the program

  • how players are supervised

  • how development decisions are made

  • what safety standards are in place

This matters for performance, but it matters even more for safety, trust, and accountability.

Our Model Is Different

We focus on structure, accountability, coaching quality, and measurable improvement. Every player follows a development pathway built around repetition, progression, and real feedback.

Instead of adding noise around the hockey experience, we simplify it:

train properly, compete with purpose, improve consistently.

Through our partnership with Zero Chill Academy, players receive access to advanced training tools, skating treadmill development, synthetic ice skill work, strength & conditioning, and biomechanics-based instruction.

Every part of the program is designed with one goal in mind:

helping players become better hockey players.

Not selling families the next promise.
Not chasing social media moments.
Not creating extra costs that do not move the player forward.

Just structured coaching, honest development, and a clear plan for improvement.

Coaching & Player Development

Elite Coaching. Integrated Development.

The Rangers development model brings together experienced hockey coaches, skating specialists, biomechanics experts, and performance staff into one integrated system.

Every component of the program works together to support long-term player development.

On-Ice Development

On-ice development is led by the Rangers coaching staff in partnership with Zero Chill Academy’s player development team.

Practices are designed to build the habits that transfer directly into games:

  • skating efficiency

  • puck control

  • passing and support habits

  • shooting under pressure

  • compete level

  • hockey IQ

  • decision-making at speed

The focus is not just running drills. Every session is built with a clear development purpose, so players understand what they are working on, why it matters, and how it applies in game situations.

More Repetitions. More Engagement.

Development happens through quality repetitions.

The Rangers development environment is intentionally structured to maximize:

  • puck touches

  • skating repetitions

  • decision-making opportunities

  • active engagement during practices

We believe players improve faster when they spend less time standing in lines and more time actively developing skills in game-like situations.

Program Leadership

  • Kyle Folkerson

Kyle Folkerson is the Head Coach of the Rangers program and a former coach with the Concordia University Men’s Hockey Team. He oversees player development, team structure, practice design, and the overall development philosophy of the Rangers.

His experience at the university level brings a high-performance approach focused on skill progression, accountability, hockey IQ, and long-term athlete development.

  • Goaltending Development

Goalie development is led by IQ Goaltending, under the direction of Jake McGregor. Goalies receive dedicated development time and individualized support, focusing on positional awareness, movement efficiency, and save selection. Each session emphasizes both the technical and mental aspects of goaltending, ensuring that every goalie progresses through structured drills, video analysis, and consistent coaching feedback.

  • Skating & Biomechanics

    Dr. Ethan Wilkie, PhD Biomechanics

Program oversight for skating mechanics and biomechanical analysis helps players improve stride efficiency, posture, explosiveness, and movement patterns through science-based coaching methods.

Dr. Wilkie’s background in biomechanics and human performance helps ensure player development is rooted in measurable progression, movement efficiency, and modern performance principles.

Players benefit from advanced skating analysis and structured treadmill development sessions integrated directly into the weekly training model.

  • Strength & Conditioning

Players participate in structured dryland and athletic development sessions focused on:

    • speed

    • explosiveness

    • agility

    • balance

    • coordination

    • injury prevention

Programs are adapted to the athlete’s age and stage of development to ensure proper long-term progression.

  • Building Better Athletes

The Rangers program emphasizes more than hockey skill alone.

    Players are expected to:

    • compete hard

    • be coachable

    • support teammates

    • communicate respectfully

    • take accountability for effort and attitude

Long-term success in hockey requires more than talent. It requires consistency, discipline, and strong habits both on and off the ice.

  • Integrated Development Environment

DescriptioWhat separates the Rangers is the integration of all development components under one roof.

    Players train through:

    • team practices

    • skating treadmill sessions

    • synthetic ice skill development

    • strength & conditioning

    • small-group technical instruction

This creates a consistent and connected development experience that is difficult to replicate in traditional hockey models.

Winter 2026–27 Program

A Development-First Approach

The Rangers Winter 2026–27 program is built differently from traditional hockey teams.

Instead of relying primarily on games for development, our model emphasizes structured weekly training designed to accelerate player progression throughout the entire season.

The focus is not simply participation.

The focus is improvement.

Players receive consistent development in:

  • skating mechanics

  • puck skills

  • shooting

  • hockey IQ

  • athletic performance

  • confidence under pressure

Every week combines on-ice team training with off-ice performance development to ensure athletes continue improving throughout the season, not just competing on weekends.

This is a complete hockey development system built for players who want to take the next step.

League Play | GMHL

Full-Ice Hockey. Faster Development.

The Rangers compete in the Greater Montreal Hockey League (GMHL), the leading independent development league in Quebec.

Unlike many traditional programs, the GMHL emphasizes:

  • full-ice hockey at all age levels

  • increased puck touches

  • faster decision-making

  • skill development under pressure

  • competitive balance

This style of play gives athletes more opportunities to develop hockey sense, creativity, skating habits, and confidence in game situations.

The league structure also allows for greater flexibility in player development, tournament participation, and long-term progression.

For players looking to develop in a more competitive and development-focused environment, the GMHL provides an excellent platform.

Why the GMHL & Independent Development Model?

Full-Ice Hockey at Every Level

One of the biggest differences in the Rangers model is the emphasis on:

  • full-ice practices

  • full-ice competition

  • pace and decision-making

  • advanced puck touches

  • hockey IQ under pressure

We believe players develop faster when they are exposed to more space, more reads, more skating, and more game-like situations earlier in their development.

This creates an environment that more closely resembles the pace and demands of higher levels of hockey.

Bridging the Development Gap

Across the hockey world, development models are evolving rapidly.

Many countries outside of Canada are investing heavily in skill development and in some cases surpassing our once-dominant development model. This is especially true in areas such as goaltending, skating development, puck possession, hockey IQ, and individualized player progression.

Canada will need to continue evolving its development approach to remain at the forefront of player development internationally.

The Rangers program was built to help bridge that gap by combining:

  • modern player development methods

  • high repetition skill work

  • biomechanics and skating analysis

  • structured athletic development

  • elite coaching standards

  • meaningful competition

Our goal is not simply to place players on teams.

Our goal is to help serious athletes maximize their long-term potential.

A Complementary Pathway

For many families, the Rangers are not viewed as a replacement for traditional hockey.

Instead, the program becomes the missing piece that provides:

  • more development volume

  • more advanced teaching

  • greater structure

  • more accountability

  • more individualized progression

This is particularly important for players and families seeking a more serious development environment.

Preparing Players for Their Next Level

The Rangers development pathway is designed to prepare players for future opportunities at higher levels of hockey, including AAA and other elite development environments as they progress through their hockey journey.

For many athletes in the M9, M11, and M13 age groups, the Rangers serve as a critical development stage where players can build the skating ability, hockey IQ, confidence, athletic habits, and technical skill foundation needed before transitioning into higher-level programs later in their development.

Our goal is not simply to move players through tryouts.

Our goal is to help players arrive prepared when those opportunities come.

That means ensuring athletes develop:

  • strong skating mechanics

  • puck control under pressure

  • hockey sense and decision-making

  • confidence with pace and physicality

  • structured habits and accountability

  • a complete skill foundation

Too often, players enter elite tryout environments before they are truly equipped with the tools needed to succeed long-term.

The Rangers model is built to help bridge that gap through meaningful development, high training volume, and a more advanced teaching environment during the most important years of skill acquisition.

For players with aspirations to eventually move into AAA, prep, junior, or other elite pathways, the Rangers are designed to help prepare them properly for that next step.

Designed for Serious Development

The Rangers program is intentionally built for athletes who truly want to improve.

That means:

  • structured weekly training

  • measurable progression

  • demanding practices

  • accountability

  • skill refinement

  • long-term development focus

What we offer is highly specialized and intentionally different from traditional hockey structures.

Not because those systems are “bad,” but because they were never specifically designed to deliver this type of integrated high-performance development environment.

Our Focus Is Simple

Develop better hockey players.

Not just through games.
Not through hype.
Not through politics.

Through structure, coaching, repetition, accountability, and meaningful development over time.
